celia nicolson is a fat & queer sculptor, drawer, printmaker and multimedia maker. they are based in new york.

As I move through the world, the fat of my stomach leads me. The external world can welcome it, be offended by it, or simply observe it—and I can do the same.

My continual attempts to lay claim to my fatness, in both its joys and its pains, produces an unstable, ever-changing relationship between my flesh and my self.

My work interrogates the judgments that reside within me: are they my own or are they imposters? Through utilizing a range of materials and textures, silky and sharp, I explore the reality of having a body that I desperately want to hold even in moments of detesting it.
