butter torso (2021) is a piece that emerged from hours spent touching, squeezing, and pressing my torso and stomach. The mid-section is the most accessible area of my fatness. I can look down and see how I fold, I can insert my fingers in between layers of my flesh, and I can grab and push to make more.
To produce butter torso (2021) I sat as plaster bandages were draped, rubbed, and hardened around me. My hunched, seated position mirroring my stance of self-observation I so often find myself in- head looking down towards my belly.
Once the mold was made, I used 70lbs of butter to create the cast. Stick by stick, warmed between my palms, I pressed and spread them into the mold. Touching with curiosity, and in moments repulsion, I sat, engaging with the shell of my torso and butter as I would my own skin and fat.
